College graduates don’t always remember who the keynote speaker was at their commencement ceremony, but the Morehouse College Class of 2019 will always remember it was billionaire investor Robert F. Smith because of the huge surprise he had for them.
Smith, who is the chairman and CEO of private equity firm Vista Equity Partners, was the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the all-male historically black college. He elicited huge cheers from the 400 graduates when he told them, “My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans. You great Morehouse men are bound only by the limits of your own conviction and creativity.”
Smith’s grant will pay off approximately $40 million in student loans. (Fox News)
Hot Takes:
- This Smith guy is going to be invited to speak at a lot of other colleges.
- Members of the Class of 2018 should have waited another year to graduate.
- Usually graduation commencements are boring. This one was not.
